CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Mar. 23, 2009: For years, Jamaica`s national carrier set itself apart from other airline`s by offering meals and free champagne to economy class passengers.
But come May 1, those perks of travel will be a thing of the past on the financially strapped carrier. In another cost cutting measure, officials on Friday announced Air Jamaica will now begin to offer economy class passengers a complimentary packaged snack, instead of the current meal service.
Complimentary champagne will be discontinued. But tea, coffee, soft drinks and juices will remain complimentary and passengers will be able to purchase alcoholic beverages if desired.
Air Jamaica’s premium service in Lovebird Executive Class will continue to feature complimentary meals and beverages.
However, for those coach passengers desiring meals, the carrier says it will introduce a new `Buy on Board` program with snacks that showcase the flavors of Jamaica in September 2009.
`These changes to meal service in Economy Class will allow Air Jamaica to be more competitive in today’s environment and will secure significant efficiencies as we serve the travel needs of our customers,` said Bruce Nobles, Air Jamaica’s President & CEO.
