Dominica Election May Come Early

CaribWorldNews, ROSEAU, Dominica, Tues. May 12, 2009: Nationals in the Commonwealth of Dominica may go to the polls this year instead of 2010.

While general election on the tiny island is not due until next year. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has called on supporters of the ruling Dominica Labour Party to be prepared for a general election soon.

`We are ready to take on the enemies and the political detractors from here and overseas. Whatever we have to do as a party to regain and retain the faith of the electorate, will be done,` Skerrit told supporters late Sunday.

But he insisted that `none of us know the date` for the polls. The DLP-led administration won 12 of the 21 seats in the 2005 general election.

Opposition parties on the island have criticised the Skerrit government for failing to provide employment and bring economic relief to the country.
