CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Aug. 4, 2009: Police in Nassau County, New York say they are still investigating a fatal jet ski crash that claimed the life of a Guyanese man and his young son, Saturday.
Police say they are investigating the dock as well as the possibility of speeding on the part of Guyana-born, Jamaica, Queens resident, Roopnarine Gopaul.
Gopaul was killed shortly after his 1998 Yamaha WaveRunner struck the pier at Crooked Creek in Lawrence, L.I. Officers found Gopaul in the water, unconscious and not breathing. They were able to revive him before he was taken to St. John’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
His 5-year-old son Christopher, was found on the watercraft. and was flown to Nassau University Medical Center with head trauma, where he later died.
Gopaul craft crashed in the pier and lodged under the dock, uprooting a portion of it. Gopaul, 42, was reportedly a truck driver who moved to the United States from Guyana in 1988. He married in 1999 and had two kids, Christopher and 6-year-old Kaila.
Relatives said he had been riding the Jet Ski for 10 years. Police say they will conduct safety tests on the 11-year-old watercraft.
