CaribWorldNews, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Weds. July 1, 2009: A 21-year-old Jamaican man accused of hijacking a Canadian jetliner in April will stand trial on July 13th.
Stephen Fray was yesterday judged mentally fit to stand trial to face six charges, including robbery and assault in relation to the hijacking incident that made global headlines.
A judge Tuesday made the ruling after a government psychiatrist determined the young man is capable of understanding the charges against him.
Fray boarded a CanJet Airlines plane at Montego Bay’s airport pn April 19th after breaching security barriers at the Sangster International Airport.
Armed with a gun, he kept security personnel at bay and held 182 passengers and crew hostage on the aircraft after demanding to be taken to Cuba.
He eventually released the passengers, but kept the six-member crew on board, despite the efforts of police negotiators and family members. Fray was arrested after a Jamaica army and police team stormed the aircraft.
