New Year’s Eve hot happenings

Revelers began celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square, New York (NYC) as early as 1904, but it was in 1907 that the New Year’s Eve Ball made its maiden descent from the flagpole atop One Times Square. The Ball has been lowered every year since, with the exceptions of 1942 and 1943, when the ceremony was suspended due to wartime “dimout” of lights in NYC — nevertheless, the crowds still gathered in Times Square and greeted the New Year with a minute of silence. The ball drop in New York’s Time’s Square is historic in signifying the start to a New Year. While there’s no historic event such as this to be had in New Providence, there are still amazing events happening around town to celebrate the start of every New Year. The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort will present a Bond experience; and the Atlantis is giving fans an expanded weekend performance with not just one, but two legendary performances with Sting and Kool & the Gang taking to the stage on two separate nights.

A BOND AFFAIR AT THE OCEAN CLUB

Oscar Morales, executive director food and beverage, The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort says their New Year’s soiree is the best place to celebrate the outgoing year and to bring in a new one with their Bond affair, which has been aptly dubbed as the property has featured prominently in two James Bond movies —“Casino Royale” and “Thunderball”.

The New Year’s Eve gala at the Ocean Club is being billed as glitz, glamour and all, allowing you to escape to a place where Bahamian beach chic meets quintessentially British and all things Bond for an evening that promises an electric atmosphere with the glitz and glamor of 007, live music, entertainment, DJ sets and a sensational firework show on Sunday, December 31 at 7 p.m.

In a nod to Bond, the evening will feature a James Bond look-alike, entertainment from a 10-piece band out of Miami, three deejays, all-inclusive drinks and food, and a fireworks show.

“Besides our beautiful setting, what better way to celebrate New Year’s,” said Morales.
“There’s no better place to be,” he said of the cocktail attire soiree that will feature premium spirits at the celebration that will take place in the open-air venue.

Children and teens will not be left out of the fun — Morales promises a mini version of the adult event, perfect for their age set, with lots of dancing and food to be had.

Tickets to the Bond Affair are: gala all access VIP — $1,000; dinner at Dune and gala event — $750; gala event only — $600 (plus VAT and gratuity).

STING AND KOOL & THE GANG
AT THE ATLANTIS

Last year R&B crooner John Legend gave all of himself at Atlantis LIVE New Year’s Eve concert.
The year before Diana Ross came out and rocked the house. This year Atlantis is giving fans not just a legendary performance, but an expanded weekend performance with not just one, but two performances with Sting and Kool & the Gang taking to the stage on two separate nights.

Sting is one of the world’s most distinct solo artists. He has sold close to 100 million albums from his combined work with the Police and as a solo artist. His songs include “Desert Rose”, “Englishman In New York”, “Fields of Gold”, “They Dance Alone”, “Fragile”, “Shape Of My Heart” and “Be Still My Beating Heart”.

It is this artist who will rock the intimate 4,000-seat Imperial Ballroom for a set that is expected to last approximately an hour on Sunday, December 31 at 9 p.m. There will also be two hours of complimentary champagne, beer, wine and soft drinks served.

Kool & the Gang, the American funk and rhythm and blues band that was popular in the 1970s and 1980s with popular songs like “Ladies’ Night”, “Celebration”, “Get Down On It”, “Fresh”, “Jungle Boogie”, “Cherish”, “Hollywood Swinging” and “Joanna”, commands the stage on Saturday, December 30 at 9 p.m.

Upping the ante with two concerts to bring in the New Year speaks to the popularity of the Atlantis LIVE New Year’s concerts and the success they’ve had in the last two years, said Cara Douglas, Atlantis on-property marketing director.

“The parent company has seen the success and believes in it and they’re trying with two nights of concerts this year, just to offer our guests something different,” said Douglas. “We’re all excited for the experience.”

Ticket prices for the Sting concert are $550 for VIP; $450 for platinum level; $350 for gold; $275 for silver; and $150 for bronze. Prices are subject to 7.5 percent VAT.

Ticket prices for Kool & the Gang are $275 for VIP; $225 for platinum level; $175 for gold; $125 for silver; and $75 for bronze. Prices are subject to 7.5 percent VAT.

Douglas said ticket sales were going well, and people who don’t want to miss out on legendary performances should purchase tickets as soon as possible. She said many people have opted to pre-order tickets, as seating is assigned based on time and date of purchase.

“We’ve gotten very positive responses because Kool & the Gang is very popular and Sting has a legacy of great hits,” she said.

The under 18s haven’t been left out of the fun. There will be something for the kids, tweens and teens for the New Year’s Eve weekend of activities.

For the three to 12-year-olds, their countdown to 2018 is being billed as six hours of sleepless fun before 2017 is done. Up to midnight they will enjoy makeovers, car racing, crafts, video games, s’mores, popcorn, karaoke, a movie and more, with a pizza dinner thrown in for sustenance. The cost is $129, VAT inclusive.

Tweens (kids ages nine to 13) will party at Club Rush at the Flow With The Flow glow-in-the-dark event from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. At that party glow sticks and neon swag gear will come out for a night of fun, prizes and surprises. Tickets are $69.88, VAT inclusive.

For the teens (13 to 17) it’s all about “Midnight in Paradise: An all-white affair”, the ultimate teen party on the coolest dance floor, Crush. Tickets are $69.88, VAT inclusive.
