CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Thurs. Feb. 19, 2009: Was a New York Post cartoon an attempt at political humor or simply racist? Jamaican American Councilman, Leroy Comrie calls it `terrible judgment.`
The New York-based elected official last night said a New York Post cartoon, showing a black chimpanzee being shot to death by two cops as one states, `They`ll have to find some else to write the stimulus package,` was a `poor attempt at political humor.`
Comrie said he was extremely disturbed by the message conveyed and his office has received numerous calls from Queens residents who are equally outraged.
`To run such a violent, racist cartoon is an insult to all New Yorkers,` said the Queens councilman whose district represents dozens of Caribbean nationals. `This was an unfortunate incident in which a human being was seriously injured- not an opportunity to sling dangerous rhetoric. It is my belief that the New York Post owes an immediate apology to this city for demonstrating such terrible judgment and insensitivity.`
He also said `all New Yorkers of goodwill should demonstrate their displeasure with the New York Post by writing letters to their advertisers and simply stop purchasing a publication that clearly has no respect or sensitivity for people of color.`
Congressman Gregory Meeks, who represents another populous Caribbean American district in Queens, also denounced the cartoon, insisting to Hard Ball`s Chris Matthews that it was clearly racist given the fact that blacks in the U.S. have often been compared to `chimps.`
