Seven Convicted In Trinidad-Born Army Vet`s Death

CaribWorldNews, WASHINGTON, D.C., Mon. Aug. 3, 2009: Seven Trinidad nationals have been convicted in the 2005 kidnapping of a Trini-born, U.S. Army veteran.

The seven – Wayne Pierre, Kevin Nixon, Christopher Sealey, Anderson Straker, Ricardo De Four, Zion Clarke, and Kevon Demerieux – were convicted on Friday in U.S. District Court in Washington after a 10-week jury trial.

They had admitted to the hostage-taking which led to the death of 62-year-old Balram Maharaj of Mount Vernon, N.Y.

The seven all face a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of release.

Maharaj was kidnapped from a bar near Port-of-Spain in Trinidad in April 2005 and held him for ransom. In January 2006, his dismembered remains o were found in two holes in a forest in Trinidad.

Maharaj had served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He had returned to T&T for a visit.
